The Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act would prohibit any AI that could destroy humankind or overthrow the federal government.
It would establish a maximum 20-year prison sentence on anyone who attempts to create such an AI, and create a Cabinet-level Department of Artificial Intelligence to enforce this.
Texas Democratic Rep. Greg Casar introduced the legislation in the House, alongside nine original Democratic cosponsors. Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced it in the Senate.
